Awake Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Age, pregnancy, and frequent changes in weight can weaken stomach muscles and cause loose skin in most women. All the dieting and exercise in the world does not produce a flat, well-toned tummy.

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is recommended to re-shape the abdomen for those men and women by removing loose skin, stretch marks, and repairing abdominal muscles. This procedure results in more normal flat abdomen in proportion to the body, type, and weight of the patient.

Mini-Tuck:
Some patients, with small amount of loose skin with good laxity, may prefer to have the new Smart Lipo Laser Body Shaping procedure that removes fat and tightens skin, instead of a "mini tummy tuck". A full abdominoplasty is recommended for patients with significant amount of loose skin, fat, and stretch marks.

Procedure:
The abdominoplasty procedure involves the removal of excess skin by the surgeon from the middle and lower abdomen while tightening the abdominal muscles. Any stretch marks are also taken out along with the skin removal. The surgeon makes an incision stretching from hip to hip hidden in the underwear or bikini area. The location of the incision is above the pubic area. Another incision is made around the belly button.

Smart Lipo Laser procedure is also performed for added enhancements in the results. It helps to remove any excess fat, tighten and smooth the skin, thus reshaping the abdomen to appear flat, well-toned, smooth and beautiful.

Financing:
Great promotional deals are available through Care Credit Cosmetic Plan . Payments could be as low as $100 per month.

Who is a good candidate for abdominoplasty?
A good candidate for abdominoplasty is someone who is close to their ideal weight, but has loose abdominal skin and weakened abdominal muscles either from pregnancy or weight loss.

What are the different types of tummy tuck procedures?
There are different types of tummy tuck procedures for different patient needs. All types of abdominoplasty involve the removal of excess skin and the tightening of abdominal muscles, except for the endoscopic abdominoplasty. The endoscopic tummy tuck only involves the tightening of abdominal muscles and the removal of small amounts of fat. No skin is removed. The traditional tummy tuck procedure addresses imperfections in the entire abdominal area both above and below the navel. When a mini tummy tuck is performed, the surgeon only works on improving the area below the navel. An extended tummy tuck can also improve the appearance of love handles on either side of the hips, in addition to the abdominal area. A circumferential abdominoplasty is usually performed when a massive amount of weight loss has taken place, leaving an apron of loose skin around the entire body. This procedure may also be referred to as a lower body lift.

What happens during the tummy tuck procedure?
During the tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Sharma will make one or more incisions. Endoscopic and mini tummy tucks have smaller incisions then other abdominoplasty procedures. Your incisions will most likely extend from hip to hip and around the navel. Your excess skin will be removed and the abdominal muscles tightened. Sometimes a small amount of liposuction is used to remove small pockets of fat.

What is the abdominoplasty recovery period like?
The abdominoplasty recovery period is a time for gentle movement marked by temporary pain and discomfort. You will have abdominal stitches and be fitted with a tummy tuck drain to draw fluid away from the wound. It will be at least a week before the drain is removed and you are able to return to work. The stitches will be removed in stages over the course of two weeks. Light walking and other very gentle exercise will help with the swelling and prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs.

What are the risks associated with tummy tuck surgery?
Tummy tuck surgery is generally a safe procedure. If you take proper care in preparing for the surgery and follow your surgeon’s instruction regarding post-operative care, the risks are minimal. There is the risk that you will develop an infection, blood clots, or that there will be complications to the healing process. If complications occur, they can usually be treated, but may result in more prominent scarring after surgery.

What are the common side effects of abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty is major surgery, and all surgeries involve side effects. After undergoing a tummy tuck, you will experience some pain and swelling. Dr. Sharma will prescribe medication and give you instructions on how to lessen your discomfort.

What are the benefits of tummy tuck surgery?
Tummy tuck surgery can improve your appearance and self confidence. It can also be performed for health reasons if loose skin and weakened abdominal muscles have become a medical issue, as is sometimes the case after massive weight loss.

Does a male tummy tuck differ from a female tummy tuck?
Yes. Because abdominoplasty is a form of body contouring, a male tummy tuck differs from a female tummy tuck in that the surgeon is trying to achieve a very different body aesthetic.

How can I maintain my figure after undergoing abdominoplasty surgery?
To maintain the improved figure that accompanies abdominoplasty surgery, it is essential that you exercise routinely and follow a balanced diet. With proper maintenance, you can retain the results of your abdominoplasty for many years following surgery.
